What Stump Grinding Is and Why It Matters
After a tree comes down, the stump stays. It sits there for years, slowly rotting, attracting termites, getting in the way of your mower, and reminding you every week that you should really do something about it.
Stump grinding is the fix. A stump grinder uses a rotating carbide-tipped wheel to chew the stump and its surface roots into small chips. We grind 6-8 inches below the surrounding grade, fill the hole with the resulting chips, and the stump is gone. The area can be covered with topsoil and seeded, sodded, or just left to settle.
We grind stumps across Nash, Wayne, Wilson, Edgecombe, Halifax, Johnston, and Pitt counties. It’s one of our fastest services - most jobs are done in a couple of hours, and we can often do same-day service.

The Stump Grinding Process
Assessment
Not all stumps grind the same way. Before we start, we check:
- Diameter. This determines time and cost. A 10-inch pine stump grinds in minutes. A 40-inch oak stump is a bigger job.
- Root flare. Some species, especially hardwoods, have a wide root flare at the base that’s actually bigger than the trunk was. We grind the flare too - nobody wants a ring of roots sticking up around a ground-level hole.
- Location. Is it against a fence? Near a foundation? In the middle of the yard? Next to a sidewalk? Location determines equipment access and whether there are any obstructions we need to work around.
- Soil and rock. Eastern NC is generally kind to us - sandy loam and clay, not much rock. But occasionally stumps are surrounded by fill dirt with brick, concrete, or stone. Hitting those damages the grinder teeth, so we need to know upfront.
- Utilities. We always check for underground utilities before grinding. The grinder goes below grade, and hitting a gas line or fiber optic cable is not an option. NC 811 locates are free and we’ll make sure they’re done before we start if there’s any question.
Grinding
The grinder positions next to the stump and the cutting wheel sweeps back and forth across the surface, taking 2-3 inches per pass and working down below grade. The operator controls depth and direction, working from one side to the other until the entire stump is below the surrounding soil level.
Standard depth is 6-8 inches below grade. This is sufficient for:
- Planting grass or laying sod
- Covering with topsoil and mulch for a garden bed
- General yard use
If the stump location is being used for construction - a foundation, driveway, patio, or any structure - we can grind deeper. 12-18 inches below grade is typical for construction prep. Deeper grinding takes more time and costs more, but it ensures no wood remains where you’re building.
Surface Roots
Trees don’t stop at the stump. Surface roots can extend 10, 20, even 50 feet from the trunk. We grind the major surface roots in the immediate area around the stump - typically 2-3 feet out from the trunk in every direction. Roots beyond that are below grade and won’t cause problems.
If you have roots running across your yard that are heaving up the lawn or cracking a walkway, we can chase those out further. Just point them out during the estimate.
Cleanup
After grinding, there’s a pile of wood chips and dirt where the stump used to be. The volume of grindings is always more than the volume of the original stump - grinding fluffs the material up. We rake the grindings into the hole and mound them slightly above grade because they’ll settle over the next few weeks as they compact and begin decomposing.
Options for the grindings:
- Leave them. Most common. They settle and decompose over 6-12 months. You can seed over them or cover with topsoil.
- Haul off. We remove the grindings and backfill with clean topsoil. This is the better option if you want to plant grass seed or sod immediately.
- Repurpose. Wood chips make decent mulch for garden beds. If you want them moved to a different part of the property, we can do that.
We rake the area clean, blow any debris off hard surfaces, and the job is done.
Why Remove a Stump
People live with stumps in their yard for years. Here’s why that’s usually a bad idea:
Termite Magnet
A rotting stump is a buffet for subterranean termites. In Eastern NC, termites are a fact of life - the warm, humid climate is ideal for them. A decaying stump 20 feet from your house is basically a welcome sign. The termites establish a colony in the stump, expand their foraging tunnels, and eventually find your foundation. Pest control companies in Nash and Wayne counties will tell you the same thing: get rid of the stumps.
Trip Hazard
Stumps in yards where people walk, kids play, or guests visit are a liability. A stump that’s been mowed around for years gets obscured by grass. Someone walks across the yard at dusk, catches their foot, and goes down. This is especially a concern for rental properties and commercial sites.
Mowing Obstacle
Mowing around stumps is annoying and time-consuming. Landscapers charge more for yards with stumps because they have to slow down and navigate around them. Over a few years of mowing seasons, the added mowing cost approaches what grinding would have cost in the first place.
Aesthetic
A stump in a maintained lawn looks neglected. If you’re selling a property, stumps in the yard signal deferred maintenance to buyers. A clean yard without stumps looks better and photographs better for listings.
Construction Obstruction
You can’t pour a patio, build a deck, install a fence, or lay a driveway over a stump. If the stump is where you want to build, it has to go. It’s cheaper to grind it now than to discover it’s in the way during construction.

Pricing
We price stump grinding by diameter because that’s the most honest way to do it. Bigger stumps take more time, use more fuel, and wear more teeth on the grinder. Here’s what to expect:
| Stump Diameter | Typical Cost |
|---|---|
| Under 12 inches | $75 - $125 |
| 12-24 inches | $125 - $250 |
| 24-36 inches | $250 - $350 |
| 36+ inches | $350 - $400+ |
Batch Discounts
Multiple stumps on the same property are cheaper per stump. Once the grinder is on site and set up, moving from stump to stump is quick. If you’ve got 5 or 10 stumps from a recent clearing, the per-stump cost drops significantly.
Common batch scenarios:
- Post-tree-removal cleanup. You had several trees taken down and now have 5 stumps to grind.
- Property purchase cleanup. You bought a place with old stumps scattered around the yard.
- Storm aftermath. Insurance covered the tree removal, now you’re dealing with the stumps yourself.
For customers who bundle stump grinding with tree removal on the same job, we offer a better rate than if you book them separately. It’s more efficient for us to grind while equipment is already on site.

Related Services
Most stump grinding jobs follow a tree removal. If you have a property with multiple stumps from a land clearing project, we offer volume pricing. Need the debris hauled? Our grapple truck handles that.
